Macy's July 4th Fireworks along the East River Provides Good Viewing from Manhattan, Brooklyn & Queens and are Distantly Viewable from Northern Staten Island & the Southern tip of the Bronx

The Macy's 4th of July fireworks will be shown along the East River this year.

The fireworks were shown along the East River in 2014, for the first time since 2008, and have remained on the East River ever since. Mayor de Blasio had lobbied for the return, which now spans nine years. The Grucci Brothers will be doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks in NYC, which they've been doing for decades.

1. Astoria Park on Wednesday 6/29 on the East River - Queens July 4th Fireworks

4th of july fireworks 2018 queens nyc july 4thThe Astoria Park Fireworks will happen on Wednesday, June 29th. The festivities begin at 7.30 pm and the fireworks usually go off around dusk which is about 9.30 pm. The best viewing location is from the Great Lawn, but be advised that each year these fireworks become more popular.

This fireworks display is also put together by the Grucci Brothers, the same fireworks company doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks along the East River on July 4th, in NYC. The Astoria Park fireworks in Queens will be shown on Wednesday evening and provide a pastorial view from Astoria Park right alongside the East River.

The Central Astoria Development Coalition sponsors the annual fireworks display in Astoria Parkand the Queens Symphony Orchestra warms up the crowd beginning around 7.30 pm by playing classical music from the 19th & 20th centuries on a stage overlooking the East River in front of the great lawn of Astoria Park [between the pool and Hellgate Bridge].

2. Macy's July 4th Fireworks in Manhattan 2022

4th of july fireworks 2018 queens nycSee map at right for barge and public viewing locations along the East River.

The viewing locations along the East River fill quickly on July 4th with many folks heading to find their spot in the morning or by midday. Somewhere between early and late afternoon, the police lines begin to close around these areas, for crowd control purposes.

What & What NOT to bring along. You'll also want to bring along sun screen, water and be careful not to bring along too much so you can move around. Last year, and while this is unconfirmed, I believe it holds true for this year [2022], the NYPD won't allow backpacks, large bags, coolers, umbrellas or similar items past the NYPD barricades.

Best Viewing Locations for Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Manhattan 2022

4th of july fireworks queens 2018Time / Location Prep. Blocks along the East River within local neighborhoods on both sides of the river will be cordoned off by the police. This effort begins around 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon and tightens up as the crowds grow. The fireworks are expected to begin about 9.25 - 9.35 pm, but you'll need time to get into position. It's also recommended that you forego the lawn chairs and other extra baggage to the extent you can, especially the later you move into position, as this will encumber you getting past the NYPD lines and through the crowd.

Macy's Fireworks 2022 Barge Locations. While you can see the 2022 barge locations on the Macy's map above, you get a better view of the optimal viewing locations along the East River shoreline on the map below. In prior years, many of the locations south of the Williamsburg Bridge worked, but this year that's less likely the case, because the barges moved a bit further north in recent years.

4th Of July Fireworks in Manhattan 2022 - Barge Locations / Local Viewing Spots

brooklyn best viewing locations fireworks bk best places to watch july 4th fireworks brooklyn nycThe barges will be positioned in the East River between the equivalent of the Williamsburg Bridge / 23rd Street and 42nd Street on the Manhattan side, and between the Williamsburg Bridge / Transmitter Park in Williamsburg / Greenpoint in Brooklyn and 48th Avenue in Long Island City Queens .

The positioning of the barges and the number of them is designed to maximize the viewing options for an audience estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. The show will be more easily viewable from the shores of Manhattan that are north of the Williamsburg Bridge as you can see on the map at right.

Recent History. Since 2014 the Macy's 4th of July fireworks have been lit upon the East River within viewing range of all five boroughs [although a quite a distance from the south Bronx and northern tip of Staten Island]. Like most years, this year there will be five barges. The number of barges had varied from year to year - generally between four and five - although in recent years the number has remained a constant five, and they have moved them a bit further north.

The viewing audience is estimated will be in the hundreds of thousands. The show will be more easily viewable from the shores of the East River including the East Village, Stuyvestant Town and up along Kips Bay & the Uniited Nations. The Lower East Side will be a less optimal viewing location, because it is located along the East River as it curves west and heads south toward the harbor. Thus there's not a clean river view and the high rise buildings shooting up on the Lower East Side block the view.

FORMERLY GREAT LOCATIONS likely NOT as GOOD ANYMORE [4 red flags at bottom of map above]. Looking at the red upside down obelisks, on the map below, from bottom left to top right you see a number of viewing locations that have worked in prior years BUT AREN'T as GOOD AS SOME OF THE BARGES MOVED NORTH. The best viewing locations once included the South Street Seaport which was crowded and you had to get there early in the day to get in. The green space adjacent to City Hall at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge WAS fair, although the high rises block some good measure of the view. Coleman Square and Martin Tanahey Playground have the same issue as the green space at City Hall - some good viewing spots & others not as good. Corlears Hook Park on the Lower East Side should be good this year.

Probable OPTIMAL VIEWING LOCALES IN MANHATTAN. The next set of viewing locations are north of the Williamsburg Bridge and are new as optimal ones. In prior years the Lower East Side buildings blocked the view. But last year with the addition of the two new barges north of the Brooklyn Bridge around 30th Street these locations should have provided a good view. These include the East River Baseball field along the East River and Baruch Playground, a bit south and a couple blocks in. And most of the rest of the markers are in spots along the East River, as most of them should have a good Manhattan 4th of July fireworks viewing location [except the four red markers at the bottom of the map]. Enjoy.

3. Coney Island Fireworks on Friday July 1st & Coney Island July 4th Fireworks in Brooklyn NYC 20224th of july fireworks manhattan 2018

On Friday, July 1st, Coney Island will launch its second fireworks of the summer beginning at 9.30 pm along the Riegelmann Boardwalk on Coney Island in Brooklyn.

And on July 4th, 2022 the Coney Island fireworks will begin shortly after the Macy's 4th of July fireworks on the East River end. This is generally a bit before 10 pm. The Coney Island 4th of July fireworks will be held on the beach generally in the area of the Steeplechase tower in Steeplechase Park on Coney Island in Brooklyn. This is a free event.

4. The 4th Of July Fireworks 2022 Continue at Jones Beach, Long Island

4th of july fireworks 2018 manhattan fireworks july 4 nycThe Jones Beach Fireworks display has been a Long Island tradition for many years. Jones Beach is a quick 21 minute train ride from the city, or a reasonable 38 mile car ride from the city, when traffic isn't terrible on the Southern State Parkway or the Meadowbrook State Parkway leading into the park. Most spots along the beach in the park are good viewing locations. And the fireworks, like those in the city, start around dusk which give or take is about 9.30 pm. For cars, admission to the park is $10 and includes the fireworks show.

Recent History. The Jones Beach fireworks were one of the New York State budget cuts beginning in 2010. Allocations had not been made for the deployment of police officers, to provide security for the event.

In 2015 the Governor and the New York State Parks announced that these cuts were restored and the fireworks on Jones Beach on Long Island have continued ever since - excepting the pandemic in 2020. Please note that there's a $10 parking fee and after 4 pm there's a $10 admission fee.

Public Transit From Brooklyn / Queens To Jones Beach

From Brooklyn, take the subway to the Jamaica subway / train station in Queens. The LIRR leaves from the Jamaica Station every 20 minutes during peak hours, arriving in Freeport about 20 minutes later. The return frequency is about the same, as is the travel time of the trip. From the train station, you can take the N88 Long Island Bus, using an MTA Metrocard or coins valued at $2.75. The off peak one way train fares are $7.25 at the ticket office and can rise to $16.00 if you buy it onboard during peak travel times. Jones Beach is a nice quick getaway from the city, and while crowded, not as crowded as in the city.

Please note that the ticket prices mentioned above are from 2022.
